Sample Inventory App
Fall 2014 Experiment summary:
For the 2014 Fall experiment the CANON team will follow a subsurface patch infused with two tracers, Rhodamine and SF6. The patch will also be marked with drifters, floats and an AUV and will be followed over multiple (1-3 weeks) days with a combination of AUVs, wave gliders and ships. The location of the experiment will be inshore of M1 where we know the processes of interest occur and the physical dynamics are weak and conducive to patch following. The scientific focus will be on the nitrogen cycle and specifically on the re-mineralization of organic matter to nitrate in the pycnocline where the patch and the assets will be deployed. Primary, new and export production will be measured using a variety of methods in an attempt to balance the inputs and outputs of nitrogen to and from the primary producers.
Fall 2013 CANON ECOHAB Experiment September 2013
Fall Experiment Context:
The fall 2013 experiment is the second of two planned collaborations between MBARI's CANON Initiative and the NOAA ECOHAB project entitled, A Regional Comparison of Upwelling and Coastal Land Use Patterns on the Development of HAB Hotspots Along the California Coast. Institutions participating in the ECOHAB project are UCSC (lead R. Kudela), MBARI, MLML, CeNCOOS, USC, SCCWRP, JPL, and NOAA. This second experiment will take place in the Monterey Bay region during September of 2013.

Planned Activities
- From Francisco's Email:
- ESP deployment/recovery (Scholin et al.) - Sept 7 (Carson) - Oct 7 (Carson), how many, where, do/should we have a drifting ESP, is the schedule adaptive?
- CARSON/Dorado - (Chavez et al.) - Sep 16-19, Sep 30 - Oct 3 Plan TBD (day trips)
- Western Flyer - (Chavez et al.) - Sep 19 -26 Plan TBD
- LRAUV - (Bellingham et al.) - 2 vehicles?, to match ESP deployment?, length of deployments?
- Lagrangian sediment traps (Smith et al.) - 2 at 100, 200m? - Would like them spaced out through the experiment, how many deployments possible, what is the deployment duration, how many samples per deployment, how are samples divided, who wants sample?
- Spray/Teledyne gliders (Chavez et al.) - Scripps one will be making the regular L67 transect, two available from NPS to be deployed late August, early September, one to make a section along mouth of bay, another between M1 and M2? Possibility of a deep Teledyne glider, what to do? Run until mid October
- Wave gliders (Maughan et al.) - pCO2 glider going back and forth between M1 and M2, on same schedule as profiling gliders?, "engineering" glider?
- Remote Sensing - (Ryan et al.) - ?
- Modeling - ?
- ODSS - Need to define needs ASAP
- CARSON/DORADO - (Vrijenhoek, Rajan) - August 12-16, August 26, Sep 4, Oct 10, Oct 14, Oct 17, Oct 21-25
- Western Flyer - (Worden) - Oct 7 - 17

- Driving to Sunnyvale to receive waveglider on Feb. 6 Maughan/Coenen (Done)
- Training on Deployment/Recovery Maughan/Coenen with possible assist by Wahl (Delayed due to Paragon repairs and unavailable Sheila B) - Waveglider 'Tex' cancelled from ECOHAB when it was found out Feb 14 that the Waveglider OA would be available
MBARI Carson crew
- Van going down, driving down on March 14th, returning the 23rd
- John Ryan
- Mike McCann
- Holly Bowers
- Nilo Alverado (works with Worden / Kudella)
Data flow
- LRAUV Tethys
- LRAUV Daphne
- Dorado (recovered daily). Mike is running the Dorado processing
- The Lagrangian experiment is TREX following Stella drifters
- two complete sets of gulpers
- Stella Drifters - 3 to 4 available on the Carson
- ESP data or plots coming to the ships
- ODSS on shore
- Shared directory Shore to/from Carson
- ROMS Model plots outputs): (list of variables/maps) Currents? What Depths? Integrated? Temperature?
- Questions: space (x,y), domain? how to set the color axis scaling?
- Model inputs: winds
- Model data comparisons (Jim Bellingham) - side by side plots. Assuming they are generated by Dorato, they will be made available in the shared directory / data view window
- Gliders (USC)
- How are we getting information from the Yellow Fin?
- Dave is running YellowFin operations - we need to ask for the Yellow Fin "Dave Report" daily, with water sampling info.
- Sampling group has had discussions on cranking the phytoplankton specific data
- Carson
- Water sampling, John will work with Yellow Fin to merge the water sampling reports into a chief scientist report
- CTD casts
- Water sampling results kept like they are kept in BOG (cruise name, platform, cast number, bottle number, depth) (Told to Eric R for how to name the files). The general item here is naming convention for naming. ODSS team can centralize the naming convention for the purpose of helping the collaborators. John / Reiko to provide naming.
High Priority ODSS Features
- Sensor data from vehicles overlayed on tracks (sensor tracks) in situational awareness
- A communication path for operator to notify ESP team when ESP should trigger (ESP may be configured to trigger on data from it's ancillary sensors).
- Get USC Glider data into ODSS (more on what that means to come: Arvind is POC)
- Get LRAUV data into ODSS, real-time sensor data in situational awareness, access to LRAUV data pages, access to high resolution LRAUV data (more details to come)
- Get Yi's ROMS model data into ODSS
- AIS ship tracks need to be working
- Shared planning for vehicle operations
- Some mechanism must be in place to send RC locations as well as Dorado waypoints to the crew on the Carson
- Integrate Ryan's glider planning service into ODSS.
- Make sure there are three pathways for AUV data:
- Acoustic model from Dorado->RC->Shore over VSAT/3G (Frederic will write the software for the acoustic link)
- Directly from Dorado->Shore over Iridium
- High Resolution AUV data and processed products (? - maybe over 3G)
ODSS Requirements (1='must' have for spring 2013, 2='should' have for spring 2013, 3='nice' to have for spring 2013)
- Platform Support
- Rachel Carson
- (1) shared ship/shore data directory (ODSS infrastructure) on the Carson, primarily for transferring 'real time' Dorado data to shore for display on ODSS sensor tracks - part of ESP sampling/threshold scientist in the loop decision making
- (1) position
- (2) ODSS situational awareness on the Carson
- (1)AIS traffic (ship traffic)
- AIS heat map (arvind)
- WaveGlider
- (1) position
- (2) sensor tracks
- USC Gliders (2?) - contact Arvind
- Dorado

- (2) sensor tracks (if TREX enabled)
- (2) gulper positions (if TREX enabled)
- LRAUV-Tethys
- (1) position
- (2) sensor tracks

- (2)sensor/status
- Data Layers in ODSS Situational Awareness
- Standard Data Products in Data Catalog
- ROMS SIO Glider - This looks to be a product that will not overlay on a map so it is probably something destined for the Data Catalog that will open with a click of a link.
- Gulper data and water analysis
